Pope’s flight from Tenerife grounded by technical issues and high winds
Pope Leo XIV’s return flight from Tenerife to Rome has been delayed due to technical issues and strong winds, prompting King Felipe VI to assist in escorting the pontiff back to the terminal.
Pope Leo XIV’s return trip from Tenerife has been delayed due to an unexpected technical issue. According to Televisión Canaria, the aircraft scheduled to fly the pontiff to Rome was grounded shortly before its planned 4:00 p.m. departure.
King Felipe VI intervened to assist, boarding the plane to escort the Pope back to the airport terminal while the situation is reviewed. Journalist Silvia Mascareño, who is traveling with the group, reported that technical crews are currently working to reposition the aircraft. Strong winds have made the original departure maneuver impossible, necessitating a towing operation.
This incident highlights the logistical challenges of transporting high-ranking dignitaries, where security and weather conditions must be carefully managed. The delay has forced an adjustment to the papal itinerary and triggered standard contingency protocols for both aviation authorities and the Royal Household’s security team. Officials continue to monitor the situation closely, waiting for the technical and weather conditions to improve so the flight can proceed.
