Pope Leo XIV Travels to Tenerife in Milestone Canary Islands Visit
Pope Leo XIV is traveling from Gran Canaria to Tenerife this Friday morning, marking a significant milestone in his official tour of the Canary Islands.
Pope Leo XIV’s visit to the Canary Islands reaches a major milestone this Friday as he travels to Tenerife. According to local reports, the trip highlights the spiritual and institutional importance of his tour through the archipelago. The Pope is scheduled to depart Gran Canaria at 8:30 a.m. and arrive at Tenerife North-Ciudad de La Laguna airport at 9:10 a.m.
The flight, operated by an Iberia Airbus A320, has been carefully planned to ensure the privacy and safety of the papal entourage and the accompanying media. The aircraft features several symbolic touches, including an image of the Virgin of Candelaria—the patron saint of the Canary Islands—to honor the region’s deep religious traditions.
The flight also reflects the Pope’s personal history. The onboard music features the Escolania of El Escorial, a nod to Leo XIV’s background in the Order of Saint Augustine, where he spent much of his career before becoming Pope. Passengers will also be served a selection of local products during the short flight.
Technically, the Airbus A320 was chosen for its efficiency, offering lower noise levels and better fuel economy than older aircraft. With the Vatican emblem displayed on the boarding door and special decorations throughout the cabin, the flight marks a central moment in the Pope’s official visit to Tenerife.
