Pope Leo XIV to Make Historic First Visit to Tenerife on June 12
Pope Leo XIV is set to make his first-ever visit to Tenerife on June 12 as part of a Spanish tour that will culminate in a large-scale mass near the Auditorio de Tenerife.
Local media have confirmed that Pope Leo XIV will visit Tenerife on June 12, marking the first time a pontiff has ever set foot on the island. The visit is part of a broader tour of Spain, beginning in Madrid on June 9, followed by a stop in Barcelona—which includes a ceremony at the Sagrada Familia—and a visit to Gran Canaria before the Pope concludes his trip in Tenerife.
The visit will center on two main events: an urban procession through the streets of Santa Cruz and a large-scale mass. Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez confirmed that the Vatican has approved plans for the Pope to travel through the city center and various neighborhoods to meet with the public. While the Holy See is still finalizing the exact route, the city council is already preparing for the large crowds expected.
The main event will be held at the former La Candelaria container terminal, near the Auditorio de Tenerife. This location was chosen for its size, as officials expect between 40,000 and 50,000 people to attend—far more than the Heliodoro Rodríguez López stadium could accommodate. The choice of venue highlights the Vatican’s focus on the migration crisis in the Canary Islands, a priority carried over from the agenda of Pope Francis. It is possible the Pope may also visit reception centers, such as Las Raíces in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, or meet with local social organizations.
Beyond its religious significance, the visit presents major security and logistical challenges. Organizers are currently considering whether to move the Virgin of Candelaria for the final mass, a gesture that would add a strong sense of local identity to the service. The Pope’s time in Tenerife, which may include additional events in La Laguna, is expected to conclude a tour focused on the islands' role as a border region within Europe.
