Pope Leo XIV to Employ Linguistic Diplomacy During Upcoming Spain Visit
Pope Leo XIV will employ a multilingual strategy during his upcoming trip to Spain, utilizing Spanish, French, and Catalan to foster cultural connection and address migration issues in Tenerife and Barcelona.
Pope Leo XIV’s upcoming trip to Spain is more than a standard diplomatic visit; it is a carefully planned exercise in linguistic diplomacy. The Pope has developed a communication strategy that prioritizes Spanish while incorporating French and Catalan to reflect the cultural and social realities of the communities he will visit.
On June 12, the Pope will visit the Las Raíces reception center in Tenerife. During a 9:30 a.m. meeting, he will speak in French to connect with the sub-Saharan migrants living there. This visit, which also includes a discussion on integration at the Plaza del Cristo in La Laguna and a mass at the port of Santa Cruz, highlights the Vatican’s focus on migration at Europe’s southern border.
In Barcelona, the Pope will use Catalan to honor the region’s local identity. Cardinal Juan José Omella confirmed that the Pope will use the language during mass at the Sagrada Familia and at the blessing of the Tower of Jesus Christ. This will include ritual prayers and brief remarks during the ceremony.
This approach is part of a broader trend in papal visits, where language is used to foster unity and show respect for regional heritage. By speaking the mother tongues of his hosts in Tenerife and Barcelona, Pope Leo XIV aims to bridge the gap between the Church and local communities, using language as a tool for social and cultural connection. The trip will conclude with a farewell ceremony at the airport before the Pope returns to Rome.
