Pope Leo XIV is making history in Tenerife with his first-ever papal visit, highlighted by a landmark Eucharist featuring the rare joint display of the Christ of La Laguna and the Virgin of Candelaria.

Pope Leo XIV’s visit to Tenerife is a historic milestone, marking the first time a pontiff has ever set foot on the island. To prepare for the main Eucharist at the Dársena de Los Llanos in Santa Cruz, local authorities carried out a major logistical operation overnight to bring two of the archipelago’s most significant religious icons to the site.

Under strict security, the Christ of La Laguna was moved from its sanctuary to the capital by military vehicle. This is a rare event; it is the first time in five centuries that this carving has been displayed alongside the Virgin of Candelaria, the Patroness of the Canary Islands. The Virgin was transported in her pilgrimage urn during the early hours of the morning, completing the display that will sit on an altar designed by architect Alejandro Beautell.

The Pope has a busy schedule today. Before the main ceremony at 12:15 p.m., he will visit the Las Raíces migrant reception center and meet with community representatives at the Plaza del Cristo in La Laguna. His itinerary also includes a tour of Viana and San Agustín streets, followed by a private meeting at the Episcopal Palace with pastoral staff and the Order of Saint Augustine.

The official visit also includes a reception at Santa Cruz City Hall, where Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez will present the Pope with a replica of the city’s foundational Cross. Afterward, the Pope will travel to the port in the popemobile, passing through the Plaza de Weyler and the Avenida Marítima.

The event at the Dársena de Los Llanos begins at 8:00 a.m. when the gates open. The morning will feature musical performances, including a group led by Alejandro Abrante, Los Sabandeños, and a rendition of "Ave Maria" by Chago Melián. This massive effort highlights the importance of the visit and the ability of Canarian institutions to organize an event that, beyond its religious significance, has become a landmark moment in the history of the islands.
