During his visit to Spain, Pope Leo XIV held an informal meeting with nearly 250 members of the Order of Saint Augustine at the Apostolic Nunciature in Madrid to reaffirm his personal connection to the religious community.

During his recent visit to Spain, Pope Leo XIV made a unique addition to his official schedule: a private meeting at the Apostolic Nunciature in Madrid with nearly 250 members of the Order of Saint Augustine. The gathering highlighted the personal connection between the first Augustinian Pope in history and his original religious community, creating a relaxed atmosphere far removed from typical Vatican protocol.

The event, introduced by provincial superior Domingo Amigo and attended by five Spanish Augustinian bishops, allowed the Pope to set aside formal duties. Those present noted that the Pope spoke about the importance of "common union" as a way to define church communion. He also shared that he carries relics of four Augustinian saints in his pectoral cross—a gesture that deeply resonated with the attendees as a sign of his continued commitment to the order.

Among those present was Father Ángel Andrés Blanco, the prior of the community in Puerto de la Cruz. His attendance was particularly significant, as he represents the only Augustinian presence in the Canary Islands, a region with over 500 years of history that is now preparing for a future papal visit. For Father Blanco, the meeting was a meaningful opportunity to reaffirm the long-standing educational and religious work his community has carried out in Tenerife.

Beyond the personal connection, the group discussed several important initiatives, including a joint project with UNESCO to have silence recognized as a piece of human heritage. The Pope, who described his early days in office as "moments of grace," spent time chatting informally with the group, offering a rare, intimate contrast to the large, crowded public liturgies of his trip. The meeting served as a clear example of how the Pope balances his new universal responsibilities with his deep-rooted identity as an Augustinian.
