Pope Leo XIV Highlights Canarian Wrestling as Tool for Migrant Integration
During his June 2026 visit to the Canary Islands, Pope Leo XIV highlighted the role of traditional lucha canaria wrestling as a vital tool for integrating migrants and fostering social unity.
During his recent visit to the Canary Islands, Pope Leo XIV highlighted the migration crisis along the Atlantic route with a powerful symbolic gesture in La Laguna’s Plaza del Cristo: the use of lucha canaria (Canarian wrestling) as a tool for social unity. During his June 2026 visit, the Pope met with reception groups who presented the traditional sport as a way to help newcomers integrate and build new lives on the islands.
A delegation of migrant athletes attended the event, including Mamadou Cámara, a star wrestler for CL Tegueste. Cámara presented the Pope with a camisa de brega (wrestling shirt) featuring the motto "Struggling with the values of Faith." This gesture underscored how wrestling arenas serve as spaces for coexistence—a mission the Canarian Wrestling Federation has long championed to support young people arriving from Africa.
Cámara was joined by fellow wrestlers Khadin Gueye, Dieng Lamine, Kante Ibrahima, and Mame Sene, alongside Federation president Francisco Rivero and coordinator Rosendo González. The choice of lucha canaria was intentional; the sport shares many similarities with traditional African wrestling styles, creating a natural cultural bridge between the local community and those arriving from abroad.
The meeting highlighted the vital role sports organizations play in integration. As the Canary Islands continue to manage significant migratory pressure, traditional sports are proving to be more than just competition; they are providing a support network and a sense of belonging for migrant athletes. By accepting the gift, Pope Leo XIV offered institutional recognition to the local clubs that work daily to welcome foreign-born athletes into the social and sporting life of the islands.
