Pope Francis Meets Tenerife Amputee, Invites Her to 2027 World Youth Day
Pope Francis met with Mariam Falcón, a 23-year-old double amputee from Tenerife, during his visit to Spain and personally invited her to attend the 2027 World Youth Day in Korea.
The Pope’s recent visit to Spain highlighted a powerful story of resilience that went beyond official ceremonies. The highlight of the trip was a private meeting between Pope Francis and Mariam Falcón, a 23-year-old from Tenerife who has shown incredible strength after a life-changing health crisis.
Last year, just days after returning from a pilgrimage to Rome, Mariam fell suddenly ill. What began as minor discomfort quickly turned into a life-threatening case of bacterial meningitis and severe sepsis. She spent four months in the hospital, from August to December, facing a grueling recovery. While doctors initially feared she might lose her limbs, she ultimately underwent a double amputation below the knees, allowing her to keep her arms and hands.
Mariam, an Administration and Finance student, is currently in rehabilitation. Her recovery has been defined not just by her physical progress, but by the unwavering support of her family, friends, and church community. She credits this network of love and solidarity—which sustained her even during her most vulnerable days in intensive care—as the key to helping her adapt to her new life.
The meeting with the Pope, organized by the Bishopric of Tenerife, took place during the final Mass of his Spanish visit. During their conversation, the Pope personally invited Mariam to attend the next World Youth Day in Korea in 2027.
This encounter reflects the Pope’s focus on connecting with the personal struggles of young people. Mariam’s journey serves as a testament to how a strong support system and personal determination can help someone navigate trauma and continue building their future.
