Poor Visibility Forces Flight Diversions at Tenerife North Airport
Poor visibility at Tenerife North Airport forced five incoming flights to divert to Tenerife South on Wednesday, causing further travel disruptions across inter-island and mainland routes.
Bad weather at Tenerife North Airport caused further travel disruption this Wednesday. According to airport operator Aena, poor visibility forced five incoming flights to divert to Tenerife South Airport early in the morning.
To ensure passenger and crew safety, flights that could not land safely were redirected. The disruption affected both local inter-island travel and longer routes, including two flights from Lanzarote, one from La Palma, and two from mainland Spain—Barcelona and Seville.
These incidents highlight the ongoing challenges at Tenerife North, where the airport's location and frequent weather changes require strict air traffic control. Under aviation safety rules, if visibility is too low for a safe landing, diverting to an alternative airport is the standard procedure. While this is a known issue for the facility, it serves as a reminder of how much the island’s connectivity relies on clear weather at one of Spain’s busiest airports.
