Police Urge Travelers to Check Document Expiration Dates Before Summer Vacations
The National Police are urging travelers to check their passport and ID expiration dates well in advance of summer vacations to avoid travel disruptions and missed flights.
When planning your summer vacation, it is easy to get caught up in booking flights and hotels. However, the National Police is reminding travelers that there is one crucial detail that can ruin your plans if overlooked: the expiration date of your personal documents. According to the police, expired National Identity Documents (DNI) or passports are a leading cause of missed flights and travel disruptions at airports and train stations.
You can renew your DNI up to six months before it expires. Authorities urge travelers to take advantage of this window to avoid the long wait times often seen at issuing offices during the busy summer season. The renewal fee is 12 euros for a DNI and 30 euros for a passport. To renew a passport, you must provide a valid DNI, a recent photograph, and your previous passport if it has not yet expired.
While the Ministry of the Interior offers the "miDNI" app, which allows you to carry a digital version of your ID on your phone, it is important to note that this is only valid within the country. It does not replace your physical document, especially for international travel, where border and airline security regulations strictly require the original, physical ID.
As public services become increasingly digital, it is easy to forget that international travel rules remain unchanged. The police advise that checking your documents should be the very first step in your travel planning. Failing to do so can lead to significant logistical headaches and may even prevent you from crossing borders or boarding your transport.
