Police Seize €280,000 in Cocaine at Tenerife Port Following Ferry Bust
Spanish authorities arrested a man and seized 4.5 kilograms of cocaine worth 280,000 euros after intercepting a vehicle at the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Security forces in the Canary Islands have dealt another blow to drug trafficking following a successful joint operation at the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The Civil Guard and Customs Surveillance intercepted 4.5 kilograms of cocaine hidden inside a private vehicle.
The operation took place during routine border checks after a ferry arrived from Gran Canaria. Officers from the Fiscal and Border Analysis and Investigation Unit (UDAIFF) became suspicious when the driver provided false identification and acted aggressively.
When officers moved to search the car, the driver attempted to flee on foot. He struggled with the officers, causing minor injuries, before he was eventually subdued and arrested. Once the vehicle was searched, police discovered the cocaine, which has an estimated street value of 280,000 euros.
This incident highlights how criminal groups use inter-island ferry routes to move drugs, often hoping to bypass the tighter security found at airports. Authorities are now investigating whether the drugs were intended for the local market in Tenerife or if the suspect is part of a larger criminal network. The individual is currently in police custody awaiting court proceedings.
