Police in Santa Cruz de Tenerife have rescued a severely malnourished American Bully from unsanitary conditions, prompting a wider investigation that has triggered child protection protocols for a ten-month-old infant living at the site.

Police in Santa Cruz de Tenerife have rescued an American Bully found in poor health, highlighting a troubling link between animal neglect and unsafe living conditions.

Officers from the Urban Environment Protection unit (Proteu) discovered the dog chained outside a makeshift home near Playa del Muerto in the coastal area of Añaza. The animal was severely malnourished, dehydrated, and living in unsanitary conditions. Because the dog is classified as a potentially dangerous breed, police worked with the Valle Colino Regional Shelter to safely remove and transport it for urgent care.

While a woman at the scene claimed responsibility for the dog, investigators found that the legal owner is a breeder, complicating the legal process. Two other animals—a dog and a cat—were also found inside the property.

The discovery has triggered a wider investigation. Due to the substandard living conditions at the home, police have requested that municipal Social Services intervene to assess the welfare of a ten-month-old child living there.

This incident highlights the importance of local animal welfare laws, which serve as a critical safeguard for both pets and vulnerable people. In this case, the investigation has moved beyond animal neglect to activate child protection protocols, underscoring the severe risks posed by the environment in which the family was living.
