Police Raid Tenerife Nightclub Over Illegal Nitrous Oxide Sales
Police in Arona, Tenerife, arrested two staff members and seized a large quantity of nitrous oxide during a raid on a nightlife venue suspected of systematically selling the substance to customers.
Police in Arona, Tenerife, recently raided a nightlife venue in the Las Verónicas area, highlighting growing concerns over the use of nitrous oxide—often called "laughing gas"—in clubs. The operation, which took place in the early hours of June 7, led to the arrest of the venue’s manager and an employee for the systematic sale of the substance to customers.
During the search, officers discovered a significant amount of equipment used for consuming the gas. In a restricted storage area, police seized 91 large canisters, 384 smaller cartridges, 96 packs of balloons, and several dispensers. Evidence of widespread use, including discarded canisters and balloons, was found throughout the dance floor, terrace, and restrooms, indicating that the venue was running a well-established operation.
The manager, who has a prior record for similar offenses, and the employee were arrested on suspicion of committing a crime against public health. Police also confiscated 975 euros in cash believed to be proceeds from the sales. In addition to the criminal charges, the Arona Local Police have launched administrative proceedings against the business for various regulatory violations.
While nitrous oxide has legitimate medical and industrial uses, its recreational abuse has become a serious public health issue. Health officials warn that inhaling the gas can cause fainting, loss of coordination, severe neurological damage, and even asphyxiation. This latest raid underscores the urgent need for tighter controls on the sale of substances that may seem harmless but pose significant risks, particularly to young people.
