Police Raid Arona Nightlife District, Seize Drugs and Nitrous Oxide
Spanish police arrested a business owner and seized a significant cache of illegal drugs and nitrous oxide during a crackdown on drug trafficking in the Las Verónicas nightlife district of Arona.
A recent police operation in the Las Verónicas nightlife district of Arona has highlighted the ongoing issue of drug trafficking in popular tourist areas. On May 24 and 25, the National and Local Police conducted a joint raid that resulted in the arrest of a business owner on charges related to public health offenses.
The operation uncovered a wide variety of illegal substances. In one establishment, officers found a hidden stash of cocaine, marijuana, and synthetic drugs—including MDMA, ecstasy, and "pink cocaine" (tusi)—ready for sale in a staff-only area. A second inspection led to the seizure of 2,376 canisters of nitrous oxide, commonly known as "laughing gas," along with the equipment used to dispense it.
While nitrous oxide is often treated differently than traditional narcotics, health authorities are increasingly concerned about its recreational use. Consuming the gas can lead to serious health issues, ranging from neurological damage to fatal complications. Police are now using municipal regulations and administrative controls to curb the growing trend of its use in nightlife venues.
In addition to the criminal investigation, the police reviewed both businesses for compliance with local regulations and reported their findings to the Arona City Council. This operation is part of a broader strategy to prevent organized crime. Authorities continue to encourage the public to report suspicious activity via the email address antidroga@policia.es. The intervention underscores the difficulty of policing nightlife areas, where the mix of illegal drugs and unregulated substances requires constant oversight from both local and national security forces.
