Security forces prevented a major tragedy last Friday at the Parque Santiago I residential complex in Playa de las Américas, Tenerife. The incident, which occurred shortly after 5:30 p.m., serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of domestic negligence in busy residential areas.
Investigators determined that the fire was caused by residents leaving damp fabric on an active electric stovetop. This oversight nearly led to a catastrophe, as the fire started dangerously close to a gas supply line. The situation was brought under control thanks to quick-thinking neighbors and the local police. After a resident noticed smoke coming from a neighbor’s apartment, they contacted the owners, who provided the code to a lockbox containing the keys. Police officers used this access to enter the home and successfully extinguished the flames using the building’s own fire safety equipment before the situation escalated.
Firefighters from the Tenerife Consortium later arrived to secure the scene, ventilate the apartment, and ensure the fire was completely out.
