Police, Navy Seize 7 Tons Cocaine Off Canaries
Spanish police and navy seized 7,000 kg of cocaine from a cargo ship in the Atlantic near the Canary Islands, marking one of the largest drug busts ever made in the region.
The National Police and the Spanish Navy have stopped a cargo ship carrying around 7,000 kilograms of cocaine in the Atlantic Ocean. Security forces confirmed to the EFE news agency that this is one of the biggest drug seizures ever made near the Canary Islands.
The ship was found and stopped roughly 290 nautical miles (about 535 kilometers) from the Canary Islands. This operation involved a police team on board the Spanish Navy's maritime action vessel, the 'Rayo'.
After being stopped, the drugs will be taken to the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and handed over to the court. This operation is part of ongoing efforts to monitor and fight international drug trafficking in the Atlantic. The Canary Islands are a key location for intercepting large drug shipments heading for Europe.
Authorities have not yet released more details about the ship's crew, where the drugs came from, or where they were going. However, more actions are expected following this major seizure.
