Police Intercept Drug Smuggling Attempt at Tenerife Juvenile Detention Center
Canary Islands police arrested a woman for attempting to smuggle hashish into the Valle Tabares juvenile detention center in Tenerife.
Security at juvenile detention centers is back in the spotlight following a recent intervention at the Valle Tabares facility in Tenerife. The Canary Islands General Police Corps successfully stopped an attempt to smuggle drugs into the center, highlighting the ongoing challenges of keeping these facilities secure.
The operation was launched after police received a tip-off about a potential smuggling attempt. Using a specialized canine unit, officers worked with the facility’s management to intercept the visitor. A 36-year-old woman was arrested and is now under investigation after seven grams of hashish were found hidden in her belongings. She allegedly intended to pass the drugs to a relative held at the center.
The woman is now facing legal proceedings for a crime against public health. This incident underscores the difficulty of managing access to reform centers. Drugs not only pose a criminal threat but also undermine the rehabilitation programs and safe environment essential for the minors living there. In this case, the quick action of the Canary Islands Police prevented the drugs from reaching the residents, ensuring the facility remained secure.
