Santa Cruz de Tenerife remained peaceful this Saturday after a major police operation dismantled a local cell of the "Blocus" movement, resulting in two arrests and the prevention of planned riots.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife remained calm this Saturday, defying recent reports that predicted unrest. While many shopkeepers on the busy Calle del Castillo had boarded up their windows the day before out of fear of vandalism, the street saw its usual activity throughout the day.

The peaceful atmosphere was the result of a major police operation. Working with the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office, the Civil Guard dismantled the local branch of a movement known as Blocus. Two people, including a 16-year-old, were arrested and charged with public disorder. Investigators say the pair used encrypted messaging apps to organize attacks on businesses, set fire to street furniture, and target law enforcement.

This operation was part of a wider national effort that led to a dozen arrests across several provinces. In Tenerife, local authorities—including the City Council and the Cabildo—had stepped up security in response to specific threats against areas like Calle del Castillo and the "Golden Mile" in Playa de Las Américas.

The Blocus movement presents a difficult challenge for police, as it relies on volatile, fast-moving digital calls to action. While the police successfully shut down these communication channels and prevented the planned riots, they remain on alert for any isolated incidents. For now, however, effective digital intelligence work has successfully kept the city’s public spaces safe and open.
