Spanish National Police have arrested and imprisoned a boat skipper following a six-month investigation into a human trafficking operation that brought 84 migrants to Tenerife from Gambia last November.

Authorities have made a significant breakthrough in the fight against human trafficking networks along the Atlantic route. Police have arrested and imprisoned a man identified as the skipper of a boat that arrived in Tenerife last November. The arrest, made by National Police in La Laguna, follows a six-month investigation.

The case began when a cayuco carrying 84 people was discovered near the Port of Granadilla. The passengers, mostly adult men, were in poor health after a grueling nine-day journey from Brufut, Gambia. Investigators spent months tracing the logistics of the trip, eventually identifying the boat's operator. He was apprehended on the Carretera de la Esperanza and has since been ordered to jail by a judge.

Under the Spanish Penal Code, facilitating irregular immigration is a crime against the rights of foreign citizens. These investigations are often complex, as it is difficult to prove the specific role of skippers who are frequently part of larger, organized criminal groups that exploit vulnerable migrants. The National Police continue to urge the public to report suspicious activity through their digital platforms, noting that these arrests are vital to dismantling the criminal networks behind the boats arriving in the Canary Islands.
