Podemos Councilor Files Complaint Against VOX Representative Over Alleged Intimidation in Adeje City Council
Podemos councilor Gabriel González has filed a formal complaint against VOX councilor Christian Pablo Comellas Barreneche, alleging verbal abuse and intimidation during a heated Adeje City Council debate on historical memory.
Political tensions flared at the Adeje City Council on Tuesday, leading to a heated confrontation during a plenary session. Podemos councilor Gabriel González has filed a formal complaint alleging that VOX councilor Christian Pablo Comellas Barreneche directed severe insults and intimidating gestures toward him during a debate on democratic memory.
The incident took place while the council was discussing a motion to honor 36 local victims of Francoist repression, in line with Law 20/2022. According to González, the VOX councilor verbally disparaged him and made a clenched-fist gesture, which he interpreted as a threat of physical violence.
This clash highlights the increasing strain in local government, where debates over history are testing the boundaries of parliamentary conduct. Podemos Canarias has condemned the event as an act of political violence, warning that such behavior threatens democratic pluralism and risks replacing constructive debate with harassment.
In response, Podemos Canarias has requested that the incident be officially recorded in the plenary minutes. They are calling on the municipal leadership and other political groups to publicly condemn the behavior, arguing that silence could be seen as legitimizing bullying. The party maintains that discussions on historical memory should be handled with respect for all elected representatives, rather than through coercion.
