Playa de las Américas Stabbing Upgraded to Murder Case

The investigation into a fatal stabbing in Playa de las Américas has shifted following the death of the victim, a Gambian man, last Sunday. According to the newspaper El Día, the case has been upgraded from attempted homicide to murder, meaning it will now be heard by a jury at the Provincial Court of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Magistrate Nelson Díaz Frías, of Arona Court Number 4, has ordered that the primary suspect, a Moroccan man, be held in custody without bail. This decision follows an investigation by the National Police, who concluded that the suspect was responsible for the stabbing.

The incident occurred last Thursday afternoon near the Verónicas commercial area and Avenida Rafael Puig Llivina. According to investigators, the victim was walking with the suspect and a British man when an argument broke out between the victim and the suspect. The altercation ended when the victim suffered a fatal neck wound; he was taken to a local hospital, where he died several days later.

The third man, a British citizen, has been cleared of any criminal involvement. Although he was initially detained alongside the suspect, police and prosecutors have determined he was not involved in the attack and he is now considered only a witness.

This case underscores the security challenges in busy tourist and nightlife areas, where quick police action is vital to securing evidence. By classifying the crime as murder, the legal proceedings will now fall under Spain’s Jury Law, ensuring public participation in the trial process.
