Phe Festival 2024 Unveils 'Ways of Inhabiting' Exhibition at Macew Museum
The 11th edition of the Phe Festival in Puerto de la Cruz will feature the "Ways of Inhabiting" exhibition at the Eduardo Westerdahl Museum of Contemporary Art, showcasing works from 27 emerging Canary Island artists.
The 11th edition of the Phe Festival is set to take place in Puerto de la Cruz on September 4th and 5th, and organizers have officially launched the event's preliminary programming. At the heart of this year’s cultural lineup is the Phe Gallery, a platform dedicated to showcasing emerging talent from the Canary Islands. This year, the gallery moves to a new home: the Eduardo Westerdahl Museum of Contemporary Art (Macew).
Located in the historic Casa de la Real Aduana, this new venue is central to the festival’s activities. By moving the exhibition to this prominent spot, organizers hope to transform the museum from a traditional display space into a lively hub for social interaction and debate. The collective exhibition, titled Ways of Inhabiting, features work from 27 artists chosen from over 100 applicants. Curated by Beatriz Roca, with support from M. Lohrum, Carlota Neris, and Adrián Trujillo, the exhibition explores the connections between architecture, personal identity, and environmental sustainability.
The initiative aims to bring contemporary art into the mainstream, using creative expression to examine how we live today. The participating artists—Kernel, Ohiane de Felipe García, Magali Brincat, Marina Sunyer, Irene Suárez, Clara Montesdeoca, Sublime.86, Andrea Moreno González, Laura Santana, Albadortart, Amaia Senante, Uri Reis, Ale Arbizu, Gabriel Gil González, Aitana Spruyt, Paula Alayón de la Rosa, Elena Casanova, Jose Saucedo, Marina Valls, Germán Páez, Nacho Torres Toledo, Rubén Guedes, Lara García, Cristina García, Denso, Paula Calavera, and Juin—offer a wide range of styles, from material-focused research to personal critiques.
The exhibition opens this Friday at 7:00 PM with a live painting session by Juin and Paula Calavera, set to music by Andrés Morales. The program also includes Gallery Talks on September 2nd, offering a chance for the public to engage directly with the artists. Additionally, curator-led tours will take place after the opening and again on Saturday, September 5th, to mark the exhibition's closing. An outdoor sculpture installation will also extend the experience into the streets, highlighting the festival’s goal of breaking down barriers between art and the public while establishing Macew as a space for shared reflection.
