Periplo Festival Closes with Focus on Mountaineering, Canary Islands in Film
The Periplo International Travel and Adventure Literature Festival in Puerto de la Cruz concludes today with discussions on Canarian identity in film and extreme mountaineering experiences.
The International Travel and Adventure Literature Festival, Periplo, in Puerto de la Cruz wraps up today, Sunday, with a focus on extreme mountaineering and how the Canary Islands are seen through film.
The festival's final day will feature journalist Eduardo García Rojas, discussing his essay "Landscapes of the Soul. The Canary Islands, Cinema and Identity." Mountaineer Silvia Vidal will also be there, sharing her three decades of experience climbing mountains, as detailed in her new book, "There is Light Between the Ropes."
Eduardo García Rojas is a journalist, essayist, and has worked as a critic, screenwriter, and content manager. He also manages the cultural section "El Perseguidor" in DIARIO DE AVISOS, which highlights the island's culture. Since 2021, he has also directed the Ciudad de Tacoronte Historical Novel Festival.
Alongside journalist Saray Encinoso, he will present "Landscapes of the Soul. The Canary Islands, Cinema and Identity" at the Costa Martiánez Tourist Complex. This essay explores how landscape, memory, and the islands' unique nature influence storytelling, themes, and visual styles in filmmaking.
Through interviews with various filmmakers, García Rojas highlights a shift: more filmmakers are choosing to film in and about the Canary Islands, transforming them from a generic backdrop into a distinct and important location.
Silvia Vidal, a renowned figure in international mountaineering, will share her experiences climbing challenging peaks. Vidal has dedicated over 30 years to climbing, particularly solo climbing, and is known for her exploration skills.
She has pioneered routes on mountains in the Himalayas, Karakoram, Alaska, Patagonia, and Baffin Island, often without any communication devices. This means she can spend weeks in extreme conditions, completely isolated.
In an interview with Rosa María Calaf, she will discuss her book "There is Light Between the Ropes" today (1:00 PM), reflecting on her solo expeditions from both a physical and emotional perspective.
Although the literary festival concludes today at the Costa Martiánez Tourist Complex, the exhibition "Summits in Sight. Views from the Mountain," featuring works from the Island Mountaineering Federation of Tenerife (FIMT), will remain open at the Castillo de San Felipe Cultural Space until November 7. The festival awarded writer Agustín Pániker and photojournalist Gervasio Sánchez on Friday.
