The fifth annual Guamasa Popular Race in San Cristóbal de La Laguna drew over 400 participants, underscoring the municipality's commitment to fostering grassroots community fitness.

Local sports events in San Cristóbal de La Laguna continue to go from strength to strength. This weekend, the fifth annual Guamasa Popular Race drew over 400 participants, highlighting the community's growing enthusiasm for local fitness initiatives.

Organized by the local government in partnership with the Santa Rosa de Lima Neighborhood Association, the race was notable for its diverse turnout. Women made up 41% of the runners, while children accounted for one-fifth of the total participants. Badel Albelo, president of the Autonomous Sports Organization (OAD), noted that this focus on grassroots participation is part of a wider strategy to bring sports activities to every corner of the municipality.

In the competitive six-kilometer race, Francisco Cabrera Galindo took first place with a time of 19 minutes and 24 seconds, followed by brothers Daniel and Iván Sáez Mínguez, who both finished in 19 minutes and 55 seconds. In the women’s category, Marta Sánchez Lupon won with a time of 21 minutes and 56 seconds, followed by Marta Arnay (22:23) and Tere Linares Hernández (25:48).

The three-kilometer race saw a tight finish in the men’s category, with Eduardo Sienes García and Javier Prieto Ruiz sharing the top spot at 9 minutes and 45 seconds, while Miguel Ángel Pérez Pérez took third in 9 minutes and 50 seconds. For the women, María Cristina Izquierdo Rodríguez finished first in 12 minutes and 10 seconds, followed by Raquel Pérez Pedrola and Karen Huby, who both clocked in at 12 minutes and 21 seconds.

The event, which kicked off at 10:00 a.m., once again proved to be a vital social and sporting highlight for the local community.
