Over a thousand participants completed the nineteenth annual Brother Pedro Route in southern Tenerife, a 19-kilometer trek celebrating the saint’s 400th anniversary while preserving the region's historical and cultural heritage.

The nineteenth annual Brother Pedro Route proved its status as a cornerstone event in southern Tenerife this past weekend. More than a thousand participants completed the 19-kilometer journey from Vilaflor de Chasna to the saint’s cave in Granadilla de Abona. Beyond being a sporting challenge, the event serves as a vital way to preserve the island’s cultural heritage.

The route highlights ancient paths that were once essential to the region’s livestock economy. Stretching from an altitude of 1,400 meters, these trails are physical reminders of routes documented in 18th and 19th-century maps. This year’s walk held extra significance, marking the 400th anniversary of Brother Pedro’s birth and strengthening the connection between the region’s history and its spiritual legacy.

Despite hot weather and hazy conditions, the event ran smoothly without any serious incidents. A well-coordinated effort between the municipalities of Granadilla de Abona and Vilaflor de Chasna, supported by emergency services and volunteers, ensured that participants remained safe throughout the five-hour trek.

The event’s flexible structure allowed walkers to join from various points, including Charco del Pino, San Isidro, and El Médano. With the help of partners like AENA and Titsa, the route continues to bring people of all ages together. Organizers praised the high turnout, noting that protecting these traditional trails is essential for maintaining the local identity of southern Tenerife as the area continues to grow and change.
