Italian actress Ornella Muti and Galician director Rodrigo Cortés will be the guests of honor at the "Ciudad de La Laguna Isla Calavera" fantastic film festival in the Canary Islands.
Great news for movie buffs! The Canary Islands Fantastic Film Festival "Ciudad de La Laguna Isla Calavera" has announced who will be visiting them for the ninth festival, which will take place from November 7 to 16. And it's Italian actress Ornella Muti and Galician director Rodrigo Cortés!
This was announced at the Catalonia Fantastic Film Festival, where the Tenerife Film Commission presented the Canary Islands as an ideal location for filming movies.
Daniel Fumero, co-director of "Isla Calavera," told filmmakers why the Canary Islands are so loved by filmmakers from all over the world: favorable conditions, beautiful locations, and a cool, constantly developing film industry. He was joined at the meeting by Ramón González Trujillo, another co-director of the festival, and Vanessa Bocanegra, deputy director.
Ornella Muti will receive the "Legend of Fantastic" award, and Rodrigo Cortés will receive the "Isla Calavera" honorary award.
The festival will honor Ornella Muti, a star of fantastic cinema, for her role as Princess Aura in the film "Flash Gordon" (1980). In Tenerife, the actress will receive the "Legend of Fantastic" award, which was previously presented to, for example, Sam J. Jones, the lead actor in "Flash Gordon."
Rodrigo Cortés will be awarded for his cool contribution to cinema. The 15th anniversary of his film "Buried" (2010), which became a real breakthrough in the genre, will also be celebrated. The film will be screened at the festival, and the director will be present!
Cortés has directed exciting films full of mystery and suspense, such as "Red Lights" (2012), "Blackwood" (2018), and "Escape" (2024), which was supported by Martin Scorsese himself.
Ornella Muti and Rodrigo Cortés will join other star guests who have already been announced: Randal Kleiser, director of "Grease" and "Flight of the Navigator," actors Jenette Goldstein and William Hope from "Aliens," actress, director and producer Sara Sálamo, who will receive the "Canary Talent" award, and Marian Salgado, known for the film "Possession" (1975).
"Isla Calavera" also announced the first films to be screened at the festival: the Argentinian thriller "The Killer," the psychological horror "Dysphoria," the artificial intelligence thriller "Singularity," and the crime action film "Luger."
Special mention should be made of the film "The Thing in the Fog" by Canary Islands director Chedey Reyes. It will be shown as part of the "Made in the Canary Islands" program to support local filmmakers. This film is a mix of comedy and science fiction, filmed in the style of B-movies and John Carpenter.
