Olga Cerpa and Mestisay to Premiere New Album 'La costa de los cantares' in La Laguna
Olga Cerpa and Mestisay will debut their new album, La costa de los cantares, this Thursday at the Leal Theatre in La Laguna, featuring a musical exploration of the Canary Islands' historical maritime connections to Africa.
Atlantic roots music returns to the spotlight this Thursday at 8:30 p.m. at the Leal Theatre in La Laguna. The venue will host the live premiere of La costa de los cantares, the first new album from Olga Cerpa and Mestisay in four years.
More than just a collection of new songs, the project serves as a musical exploration of the Canary Islands' place in the world. It challenges the idea of the islands as isolated, instead presenting the archipelago as a historical crossroads. To capture this, the group studied the shipping routes and human connections that have linked island fishermen for decades to coastal communities in Senegal, Mauritania, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, Angola, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
This international project was brought to life through a wide-reaching collaboration. Recorded over ten days last November at Jorge Cervantes' studios in Oeiras, Portugal, the album features contributions from musicians and vocalists across Africa. The result is a blend that updates traditional island folklore with a modern sound, while maintaining the emotional depth that has defined the group’s career.
The album acts as a living archive, preserving the oral history of fishing communities and their transatlantic ties. Tickets for the debut performance are available now on tickety.es.
