An off-duty police officer prevented an attempted home invasion in Los Cristianos, Tenerife, after intervening to stop intruders from occupying an inhabited property.

Tensions over housing in the south of Tenerife flared up again last weekend in Los Cristianos, when an off-duty police officer stopped an attempted home invasion. The officer heard a resident calling for help and intervened, preventing the intruders from taking over the occupied property and arresting the main suspect.

The incident occurred on El Coronel Street, a central area near the coast in Arona. According to reports, a man and a woman tried to force their way into the home, claiming they had a right to the property. While the woman managed to escape when the officer arrived, the man was held until a patrol car arrived to take him into custody. He was later taken to the National Police station in Costa Adeje and is now awaiting a court appearance in Arona.

While this incident was alarming, it goes against recent crime trends. Data from the Ministry of the Interior shows that cases of trespassing and illegal occupation dropped by 10% in the Canary Islands last year, with 596 recorded incidents. A similar 10% decline was seen across the rest of Spain, where there were 14,875 recorded cases in 2025.

Despite these falling numbers, the case highlights the ongoing housing pressures in tourist-heavy areas like Arona. While it is rare for intruders to target homes that are currently occupied, this incident shows the risks homeowners face from direct intimidation. The quick actions of the off-duty officer prevented the situation from escalating, keeping the focus on the importance of public safety and property rights in the region.
