The OCU notes that inflatables are highly vulnerable to wind, waves, and currents, which can quickly carry swimmers into dangerous waters. This risk applies to both children and adults, as people can easily become disoriented or drowsy while drifting, leading them further away from the shore.
Beyond the risk of drifting, the OCU urges caution around the edges of swimming pools. Using air mattresses near pool borders increases the risk of painful collisions with hard surfaces. The most effective way to stay safe is through constant adult supervision and by choosing to swim in areas staffed by professional lifeguards.
Experts emphasize that water safety depends on following official warnings. Always check the flag system: green means conditions are safe, yellow indicates caution, and red means swimming is strictly prohibited. The OCU recommends using certified life jackets instead of inflatables for water activities and warns against jumping into water of unknown depth. If you feel exhausted or notice bad weather, such as a thunderstorm, leave the water immediately and call 112 for emergency assistance.
