A 65-year-old man is in critical condition after nurses performed life-saving CPR following a cardiac arrest that caused him to crash his vehicle in San Cristóbal de La Laguna.

The importance of basic first-aid training was highlighted once again on April 17 in San Cristóbal de La Laguna. Emergency services reported that a 65-year-old man’s life was saved thanks to the quick actions of nurses who happened to be passing by when he suffered a serious medical emergency.

The incident occurred at 11:02 a.m. on Avenida Pablo Iglesias. The man, who was driving a heavy vehicle, collapsed behind the wheel and crashed into a parked car. The nurses on the scene immediately recognized that the man was in cardiac arrest and began CPR before the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) arrived. Medical teams then stabilized the patient using advanced life-support techniques and transported him to the Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria University Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

This event emphasizes how vital every minute is during an emergency to prevent permanent neurological damage. The rescue effort was a well-coordinated operation involving medical staff, the Tenerife Fire Consortium, and local police, who secured the area to allow the responders to work safely.

This case serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by sudden medical emergencies while driving. While such events are unpredictable, the presence of citizens trained in CPR can be a life-saving barrier. Local authorities are currently investigating the accident, while the patient continues to receive care at the hospital.
