The Association of Municipalities of San Juan de la Rambla and La Guancha has invested over 400,000 euros in a new waste management fleet to improve collection efficiency and sustainability across Tenerife’s challenging terrain.

Waste management in northern Tenerife has received a major boost with the renewal of the operational fleet for the Association of Municipalities of San Juan de la Rambla and La Guancha. This upgrade addresses long-standing challenges in an area where difficult terrain and scattered populations have historically made it hard to provide efficient services.

The investment of over 400,000 euros replaces outdated equipment, including a 20-year-old vehicle in La Guancha that was no longer fit for purpose. This follows a previous 200,000-euro municipal investment and provides a permanent solution through two new specialized trucks: a 17-cubic-meter compactor for main routes and a seven-cubic-meter "satellite" vehicle. The smaller truck is designed to navigate narrow urban streets, allowing waste to be transferred between vehicles to ensure every part of the region is covered.

The Association, formed in 2000 to manage street cleaning and waste collection, is under pressure to meet modern European and national circular economy standards. By using new hydraulic compaction technology, the municipalities can now improve collection frequency while reducing the number of trips to treatment plants, which in turn lowers their carbon footprint.

For residents, this update marks the end of a period of unreliable service. The new, coordinated fleet will allow for faster, more efficient waste management that is finally suited to the unique geography and modern sustainability needs of the region.
