The tender for the restoration of the abandoned "Baudet" theater-cinema in Tenerife failed due to a lack of applications, and the authorities are preparing a new one.

The tender for the restoration of the former "Baudet" theater and cinema in Santa Cruz has failed. According to the public procurement platform, no company submitted an application. The authorities of Tenerife are already preparing a new tender to try again.

In early July, it was announced that almost 1.9 million euros would be allocated to the project. The initial works were planned to be carried out within a year: to stop the destruction of the building and preserve its architectural value. "Baudet" is located on Islas Canarias Avenue and has been owned by the local authorities since 1999, but has been closed since the 80s.

The main works included: roof repair and water protection, dismantling of damaged parts, facade restoration, structural protection, and documentation of original elements.

The project received approval from the historical heritage service of Tenerife back in December 2024, as well as a positive opinion from the urban planning department of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in April 2025.

The "Baudet" theater opened in 1944. It was designed by architect José Enrique Marrero Regalado. It was an "icon of the era of great cinemas." José Carlos Acha, the culture councilor, noted that riveted beams, like those in the Eiffel Tower, were used in the construction of the amphitheater. Throughout its history, the building has changed its purpose many times.

Unfortunately, after its closure in the 80s, time and weather severely damaged the building. Therefore, the authorities had already started a project to restore the roofs and columns last time to prevent destruction. "We are investing in this project to restore a space for culture that can become multifunctional," Acha added.
