The new Vithas Eurocanarias Ophthalmological Institute has opened in Tenerife to address rising demand for eye care and reduce patient waiting times through comprehensive diagnostic and surgical services.

Private healthcare in Tenerife is expanding with the opening of the new Vithas Eurocanarias Ophthalmological Institute. The center aims to meet the island’s growing demand for eye care by offering a comprehensive model that covers everything from routine check-ups to complex surgery, with a focus on reducing waiting times.

This expansion comes at a critical time. Chronic conditions like type 2 diabetes, which affects over 174,000 people in the Canary Islands, require regular eye exams to prevent serious complications. Additionally, glaucoma—which impacts more than 3% of the national population—remains a leading cause of preventable vision loss.

The institute offers a wide range of services, including pediatric ophthalmology, cataract treatment, and corrective surgery. Dr. Humberto Carreras, the center’s medical director, emphasizes that the primary goal is fast diagnosis, which is essential for treating eye diseases that often show no symptoms in their early stages.

By providing faster access to care, the institute helps relieve pressure on the wider healthcare system. Early detection is vital for high-risk groups, such as those over 50 or individuals with a family history of eye problems. The center is now fully operational, and patients can book appointments by calling 822 12 76 16 or visiting their website. This new facility integrates Tenerife into the Vithas group’s existing network of specialized eye care centers across the islands.
