New Oncohematology Day Hospital Opens in Tenerife to Expand Local Cancer Care
The Hospital del Sur in Tenerife has opened a new 885,000-euro Oncohematology Day Hospital, doubling its treatment capacity to provide specialized cancer care closer to home for 220,000 local residents.
Healthcare in Tenerife has become more accessible following the opening of a new Oncohematology Day Hospital at the Hospital del Sur. According to the Canary Islands Health Service, this move is part of a wider strategy to reduce pressure on major hospitals in the capital while bringing specialized care closer to 220,000 local residents.
The new facility, which cost nearly 885,000 euros, is located in a separate building on the Arona site. This expansion has more than doubled the center's capacity, increasing from 14 to 30 treatment stations. It also includes three beds, consultation rooms, waiting areas, and a dedicated space for preparing medication. By allowing patients to receive chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapies locally, the hospital significantly reduces the travel and stress often associated with cancer treatment.
The need for this expansion is clear from the service's recent activity. Since opening in June 2024, the team has administered 4,661 treatments to 582 patients. Demand has grown steadily, with 2,734 interventions in 2025 and over 1,000 in the first few months of 2026. The multidisciplinary team—made up of oncologists, hematologists, pharmacists, and nurses—provides not only medical treatment but also essential clinical monitoring and patient education.
During a recent visit, regional president Fernando Clavijo highlighted this facility as part of a broader modernization plan for the Hospital del Sur. The center, which is part of the Nuestra Señora de Candelaria University Hospital Complex, has seen a 70% increase in surgical activity between 2023 and 2025, and a 148% rise in pediatric care following the addition of new specialties.
The regional government also confirmed that the contract for the hospital’s general expansion will be awarded next week, with construction set to begin next year. Currently offering 24 medical and surgical specialties—ranging from mental health to pain management—the Hospital del Sur is becoming a vital healthcare hub for the region. This expansion supports the wider Candelaria complex, which treated over 2,500 people and provided more than 14,700 oncohematology treatments last year.
