A new 1.2 million euro medical facility in La Orotava, Tenerife, officially opens this Monday to expand primary care services and improve accessibility for over 2,800 local patients.

The opening of the new Barroso medical office in La Orotava marks a major step forward in decentralizing primary care in northern Tenerife. The facility, which officially opens this coming Monday, replaces temporary premises that had long struggled with accessibility issues.

The project represents a 1.2 million euro investment in a new 1,000-square-meter, single-story building. The expanded facility offers a wider range of services, including family medicine, nursing, psychology, physiotherapy, and pediatrics, as well as a dedicated area for emergencies and resuscitation. This expansion is designed to relieve pressure on the La Orotava-San Antonio Health Zone, which currently serves over 14,000 people.

The new office will have a significant impact on the local community. It currently serves 2,356 patients—nearly 22% of whom are over the age of 65—and is expected to increase its capacity to 2,850 registered patients. This shift aims to balance staff workloads and improve care for a population with increasing chronic health needs. The medical team will include family doctors, nurses, case managers, psychologists, and physiotherapists.

During the inauguration, Canary Islands President Fernando Clavijo and Health Service Director Adasat Goya emphasized the importance of giving local clinics more autonomy to reduce the need for patients to travel to larger health centers. By integrating these services into the existing network of clinics in La Perdoma and Camino Chasna, the project focuses on making healthcare more accessible and human-centered, ensuring that all residents have equal access to the public health system.
