New Floating Dock Proposal Sparks Fresh Controversy Over Los Cristianos Port Expansion
A new proposal for a floating dock at the Old Pier in Los Cristianos has sparked local opposition, with activists citing environmental concerns and a lack of transparency in the port's management.
A new application to install a floating dock at the Old Pier in Los Cristianos has reignited the debate over how the port in southern Tenerife is managed. The project, which would occupy 30 square meters of land and 1,100 square meters of water, is intended to house recreational boats and Maritime Rescue services.
The Platform Against the Expansion of the Port of Los Cristianos has firmly rejected the proposal and is preparing a formal response. Jorge Bello, the group's president, says they are finalizing a technical appeal—backed by a marine biologist—to be submitted next week. Their opposition centers on the potential environmental damage to the bay and the alteration of the coastline, which they argue offers no real economic benefit to local residents.
Beyond these technical concerns, the group fears this project is a step toward industrializing the port. They worry that allowing this infrastructure could pave the way for more ferry traffic in the future. This contradicts the platform’s own vision, which calls for integrating the port into the town to prevent overdevelopment.
The group is also frustrated by a perceived lack of transparency. Despite existing channels for dialogue, they claim authorities are not truly consulting them or keeping them informed about administrative procedures. With the community feeling ignored, the platform is now considering public protests to ensure the project respects the environment and the specific needs of Los Cristianos.
