Tenerife filmmaker JuanMa V. Betancort’s new documentary, The Score of the Cosmos, is currently touring the Canary Islands, showcasing a unique collaboration where electronic musician Suzanne Ciani interprets galactic data through experimental soundscapes.

The Score of the Cosmos, a new film currently screening across the Canary Islands, explores the fascinating intersection of astrophysics and experimental music. Directed by Tenerife filmmaker JuanMa V. Betancort, the project offers a unique way to share science by turning the patterns of galaxies into musical compositions.

Produced by Insularia Films and Featurent, the film is backed by several organizations, including the ICAA, the Canary Islands government, and the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands (IAC). Betancort, a member of the Spanish Film Academy known for music documentaries like Playing Lecuona and Semilla del Son, brings a creative touch to this project. In the film, electronic music pioneer Suzanne Ciani uses modular synthesizers to interpret data from the IAC, guided by the scientific expertise of astrophysicist John Beckman, who compares the structure of galaxies to an orchestra.

The film is currently touring the islands. After stops in La Palma and Gran Canaria, it is showing at Multicines Tenerife in La Laguna until April 23. On Friday, the film will move to TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes for a special screening followed by a discussion with Betancort and Beckman. The project, which features contributions from an international group of musicians, will finish its tour at the Sala Buñuel of El Almacén in Lanzarote on April 29 and 30.

This film is part of a growing trend in Spanish documentary filmmaking that blends art with science. By using aesthetic experimentation to explain complex topics, Betancort’s work not only shares astronomical discoveries but also highlights how art can help us better understand the world around us.
