A volunteer-led choral project titled "Alza la mirada" has united singers across Spain to create a symbolic, collective anthem for the Pope’s upcoming visit that addresses both faith and contemporary social issues.

A new musical project created for the Pope’s upcoming visit to Spain, titled "Alza la mirada" (Raise Your Gaze), is drawing attention for its unique approach to choral performance. Coordinated from Tenerife by Estefanía Benedicto—who works outside the professional recording industry—the project brought together volunteers from cathedrals across the country.

Beyond its religious focus, the project is notable for its complex technical and symbolic structure. To create a sense of unity, the recording was conducted simultaneously in Madrid, Barcelona, Gran Canaria, and Tenerife. Under the artistic direction of Pablo Cebrián, the goal was to blend different regional accents and voices, intentionally avoiding individual soloists to emphasize a collective, universal message.

The production also aims to reflect current social issues. In La Laguna, the performance included references to the migration crisis in the Canary Islands, adding a layer of social commitment to the piece. The organizers hope this ensures the anthem serves as a lasting tool for spiritual reflection rather than just a temporary project for the papal visit.

The project relied on the impressive dedication of its participants. Most were volunteers without formal musical training who had never heard the composition before, yet they managed to achieve a cohesive sound through intensive rehearsals. For Benedicto, whose background includes international Church gatherings, painting, and family life, the final result is a testament to a shared experience of faith.

Ultimately, the anthem serves as a bridge between Spain’s regional diversity and a unified message. By prioritizing an open, inclusive choir over individual stars, the project functions as a communal tool for prayer and introspection that organizers hope will endure long after the Pope’s visit.
