Jerónimo Saavedra, a key figure in the history of the Spanish Transition and Canarian self-government, is the subject of a new biography. Titled Jerónimo Saavedra. The Last Statesman, the book was written by his niece, Marta Saavedra, and will be presented this Saturday at 5:00 p.m. at the Masonic Temple of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
The choice of venue is significant due to the building's historical importance. The event will feature remarks from the Mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, and Jesús Soriano, the head of the Supreme Council of the 33rd Degree of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite for Spain. Since Saavedra’s passing in 2023, there has been renewed interest in his role in establishing democratic institutions in the Canary Islands.
The biography explores Saavedra’s life through the lens of his personal integrity and independence. His long career in public service included serving as the first president of the Canary Islands, holding ministerial positions in Public Administrations and Education and Science, and serving in both the Congress and the Senate. He also served as the mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and as the regional Ombudsman (Diputado del Común).
This book serves as both a historical record of one of the most influential figures in modern Canarian politics and a reflection on his legacy. As the role of the architects of Spain’s autonomous model is re-examined, this biography offers a comprehensive look at a man whose career was central to the development of the country's current political structure.
