New Anthology Revives the Poetry of Luis Feria
The Canary Islands’ Vice-Ministry of Culture and publisher Hiperión have released No existen jerarquías, a new collection reviving the nature-inspired poetry of Luis Feria for a modern audience.
Spain’s effort to preserve its literary history has reached a new milestone with the publication of No existen jerarquías. This project, a collaboration between the Canary Islands’ Vice-Ministry of Culture and the publisher Hiperión, aims to bring the work of poet Luis Feria (1927–1998) back into the spotlight after years of relative obscurity.
The 137-page collection focuses on Feria’s nature-inspired poetry, highlighting his role in the evolution of island literature. Curated by Jesús Munárriz and Jenaro Talens, the book gathers key poems from several of Feria’s previous works, including Fábulas de octubre, Más que el mar, and Cuchillo casi flor. The volume also features an epilogue by José Hierro and illustrations by Pepa Izquierdo.
This release serves as a reminder of Feria’s significant talent, which earned him prestigious honors like the 1961 Adonáis Prize and the 1964 Boscán Prize. By reissuing the work of essential authors, this initiative challenges the publishing industry’s focus on new releases, helping to provide a clearer picture of contemporary Spanish poetry. Decades after his peak, Feria’s work is once again available to a new generation of readers.
