New Anthology Maps Intellectual History of the Canary Islands
The Palabra y Verso association is set to launch a new anthology at the Real Casino de Tenerife this Friday, featuring the intellectual history of 150 key Canarian figures alongside portraits by artist Eugenio Aguiar.
A new anthology mapping the intellectual history of the Canary Islands is set to launch this Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Real Casino de Tenerife. The book marks a significant milestone in regional literature, bringing together the work and careers of 150 key figures for the first time.
This volume is the fifteenth release in the Palabra y Verso collection, a project managed by the association of the same name in partnership with Beginbook Ediciones. It stands out for its unique blend of writing and art; rather than just featuring prose and poetry, the book includes pen-and-ink illustrations by Gran Canarian artist Eugenio Aguiar. To ensure balanced representation, Aguiar has created portraits of 75 men and 75 women, turning the collection into a balanced act of collective memory.
The book, which includes a prologue by 2018 Canary Islands Literature Prize winner Ángel Sánchez, is intended to be a vital resource for understanding the evolution of island thought. The launch event will feature a discussion moderated by librarian Mariano Gambín, joined by collection director Josefa Molina and the artist, Eugenio Aguiar.
This project arrives amid a growing effort to celebrate local authors and highlight voices that have historically been overlooked by the national literary canon. By documenting writers from across the archipelago, the Palabra y Verso Association of Writers has created a comprehensive guide that serves as an essential reference for anyone interested in Canarian cultural identity.
