Neotrópico Foundation Seeks Legal Owner for Rescued Parakeet
The Neotrópico Foundation's Wildlife Recovery Center is caring for an unwell pearly parakeet found in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and is seeking its legal owner for return.
The Neotrópico Foundation's Wildlife Recovery Center welcomed a new arrival this Friday, December 19: a pearly parakeet (Pyrrhura lepida). The bird was found in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, thanks to help from the public and the local police.
The Neotrópico Foundation reports that the bird is not well and is currently in isolation for health reasons, while they wait for test results.
The foundation announced on social media that they are looking for the bird's legal owner. The parakeet can only be returned to someone who can prove they own it legally, with the correct identification ring and documentation.
If the owner isn't found, the parakeet will stay permanently at the Neotrópico Foundation, under the care of the authorities. It will live in a large aviary with other birds. This is because it's illegal to own such a bird without the proper paperwork, and it must have a closed ring or microchip for identification.
The Neotrópico Foundation also used social media to remind people that they continue their work for protecting nature in the Canary Islands, conducting research, conserving biodiversity, promoting animal welfare, raising awareness, and educating the public about the environment. They also fight against illegal wildlife trafficking and invasive exotic species.
Since 2005, the foundation has also expanded its efforts to include developing new eco-sustainable farming methods, promoting a circular economy, and creating local 'zero-kilometer' products to help achieve food independence.
