Coca-Cola: The Canary Islands became the first place in Spain where the beverage began to be bottled.
The first bottling of Coca-Cola in Spain took place in the Canary Islands in 1927, although the official beginning of the Coca-Cola era in the country is considered to be 1953 in Barcelona.
Coca-Cola was invented by pharmacist John Pemberton in Atlanta back in 1886. Initially, it was just a "tonic," but it later became one of the most famous brands in the world.
Coca-Cola arrived in Europe fairly quickly. The first bottling plants opened in Paris and Bordeaux as early as 1919.
In Spain, Coca-Cola officially began to be bottled in Barcelona in 1953. However, even earlier, in the 1920s, the first Coca-Cola was bottled in the Canary Islands. This happened at a factory in the center of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 1927.
The first bottles of Coca-Cola arrived on the islands thanks to people returning from Cuba in the early 20th century. They brought the drink directly from the United States.
In 1926-1927, Hans and Guillermo Olsen obtained permission and began bottling Coca-Cola at their factory, The Perfection. Soon, they were producing 400 bottles per hour.
But then the civil war began, and everything changed. In the 1950s, the Daurella family opened the Tres de Mayo factory, which began to produce Coca-Cola "officially."
Around the same time, in 1928-1929, newspapers in Barcelona and Bilbao began writing about Coca-Cola. In Barcelona, Francisco Duffo (Espumosos El Rayo) is considered the first to receive permission to bottle Coca-Cola. And in the Basque Country, La Vizcaína S.A. began bottling the drink in 1929.
In 2012, Carlos Chaguaceda, then president of the Coca-Cola Institute of Happiness, said that "the Canary Islands were the first place in Spain where Coca-Cola began to be sold, in 1927."
But for the history of Coca-Cola in Spain, an important date is March 31, 1953. It was then that the first bottle of Coca-Cola in Spain was produced in Barcelona. This is considered the official beginning of the modern era of Coca-Cola in the country.
In the Canary Islands, the company considers the beginning of the modern era to be February 1955, when Coca-Cola production became continuous. And to this day, the drink is produced at the factory in Tacoronte, which opened in 1997.
Thus, thanks to trade, Coca-Cola appeared in the Canary Islands earlier than it became one of the most successful products in history.
