Vandals Desecrated the Mosaic of the Virgin Mary in Candelaria
In Candelaria, vandals have defaced a mosaic of the Virgin of Candelaria, and the city authorities plan to replace it and improve the surrounding area, including the former Hotel Tenerife Tour.
In Candelaria, vandals damaged a mosaic of the Virgin of Candelaria. The perpetrators defaced the face of the Virgin Mary and left an offensive inscription nearby. This place is popular with locals, especially those who walk along the promenade in the morning. They often pass by this mosaic on their way from the Basilica.
The mosaic is expected to be replaced soon. The Dominican monks will hand over a new mosaic to the city authorities, and the public utilities will install it.
Unfortunately, this is not the first case of vandalism in this area. The former Tenerife Tour hotel has long been a problem spot since it stopped operating 20 years ago.
The building is currently closed and abandoned. It is planned to be transformed into a residential complex with a large supermarket. The city authorities also want to improve the surrounding area by creating a square in place of the former swimming pools. This land belongs to the coast guard.
The building has been abandoned since 2011, when the owners, the Rueda Varela family, decided to close it due to unprofitability. Once, in 1966, it was one of the symbols of Las Caletillas. Now there are plans to build residential buildings, shops, and extend the promenade with a square and an observation deck.
