National Police Launch Vishing Awareness Campaign
The National Police have launched an awareness campaign, including preventive podcasts on social media, to combat advanced digital scams like "vishing" that exploit trust in institutions to steal personal data.
Digital scams are becoming more advanced, often taking advantage of people's trust in banks and government agencies. This has led the National Police to launch a new awareness campaign. The police say this initiative aims to protect the public from frauds like "vishing," a phone scam that has become particularly common.
The National Police's Central Cybercrime Unit has released a series of short, preventive podcasts. These are being shared on popular platforms such as WhatsApp, X (formerly Twitter), and Facebook. The goal is to teach people about the methods used by cybercriminals. These criminals get hold of personal details like your name and bank, then call you pretending there are fake charges on your account, urging you to act immediately.
The National Cybersecurity Institute (INCIBE) explains that "vishing" involves someone pretending to be a company, organization, or a person you trust during a phone call. Their main objective is to get your private and sensitive information. Scammers often pose as bank employees, using a professional tone, and can even make it look like they are calling from the bank's real phone number to make the deception more believable. It's common for these calls to follow a text message, which makes the communication seem even more legitimate. This type of scam works by creating a sense of urgency and fear, trying to manipulate victims into revealing critical information that allows access to their money.
Given how widespread these practices are, both the police and INCIBE advise everyone to be extremely cautious and follow basic security guidelines. The National Police emphasizes a fundamental rule: no bank will ever ask you for your PIN, passwords, or verification codes over the phone. This campaign highlights the importance of digital education as a vital tool in fighting cybercrime and protecting people's assets.
