Artist Nareme Melián’s design, "The Legacy of an Empire," has been selected as the official poster for the 2027 Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival, which will celebrate the theme of Classical Rome.

The Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival has chosen the official poster for its 2027 edition, once again proving the success of a selection process that balances expert opinion with public voting. The winning design, titled The Legacy of an Empire by artist Nareme Melián, will represent the festival’s upcoming theme: Classical Rome.

This win marks another milestone for Melián, who previously designed the festival’s posters in 2018 and 2023. The selection process, which earned the artist a 12,000-euro prize, combined scores from a panel of experts with the results of a public vote. More than 15,000 people cast their ballots through the official website.

It was a close race. Melián’s work finished with an overall score of 9.48, capturing 30% of the 15,758 total votes cast between October 5 and 12. Other finalists included Juliana Serrano, Eduardo Puyol, Ayoze Felipe, and Lucía Casanova. To ensure fairness, the voting system was blind and restricted to one vote per IP address.

The winning design was unveiled at the Plaza del Príncipe during a celebration featuring music that honored the carnival’s traditions. Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez and Councilor for Festivities Javier Caraballero introduced the poster, noting that it will serve as the international face of the 2027 theme, "Eternal Rome: The Empire of Carnival."

The expert panel that helped select the winner included a diverse group of professionals from the fields of design, journalism, and the arts. With the selection process now complete, the city is shifting its focus to preparing for an edition that will bring the history of Ancient Rome to life through the spirit of the carnival.
