Sad news from the Canary Islands: Antonio Corujo Tejera, a well-known figure in folklore from Lanzarote, has passed away. He was 89 years old.
Antonio came from a true musical family. His grandfather, father, brothers, sons, and nephews were all involved in music.
He popularized the songs of "El Salinero" by Víctor Fernández Gopar, and sang them in schools in the Canary Islands for many years. He was also a soloist with Ranchos de Pascua de San Bartolomé and a member of Parranda de los Buches.
Antonio performed solo many times – on stage and even in his own barbershop. He shared the stage with famous Canarian musicians and toured many countries.
His barbershop in Arrecife was a meeting place where people gathered to talk and have fun. There, he recited poems by various poets until he closed it at the age of 86.
In the 1960s, Antonio lived in Venezuela, where he became fascinated by local music and folklore.
Before his death, his family gathered around him to sing and play the timple (a traditional Canarian instrument).
Farewell to Antonio will take place at the San Bartolomé funeral home. He will be buried tomorrow, Friday, at 11:30 a.m. in the Arrecife cemetery.
