Sad news from Spain: former Tenerife footballer Evaristo Ramos Padilla has passed away at the age of 85. Born in Tenerife, he was a talented player who played for the team for four seasons in the Segunda División (the second highest league). In total, he played 27 matches for Tenerife and also spent several years with Las Palmas.
In Sunday's match against Cacereño, the Tenerife players will take to the field wearing black armbands as a sign of mourning. In addition, before the next home game against Unionistas on October 18, the stadium will observe a minute of silence in memory of Evaristo.
Evaristo, as he was known in the football world, began his career with the Arenas team from La Laguna, before moving to the Tenerife youth team. In the 1956/57 season, his team dominated the provincial championship, not losing a single match and scoring an incredible 158 goals!
In the final of the regional tournament against Las Palmas, it was Evaristo's goal that gave Tenerife the victory. At the age of 17, he joined the first team, but did not always get enough playing time.
Evaristo was later loaned to Orihuela, before signing for Elche, who were playing in the Primera División (the highest league). However, he soon moved to Las Palmas, who had just been relegated to the Segunda División. There, he became an important player for the team, helping them return to the elite of Spanish football.
Returning to Tenerife, Evaristo became a key player in the attack. Unfortunately, injuries prevented him from fully realizing his potential, and he ended his professional career at the age of 24.
