Motorcyclist faces criminal charges after clocking 102 km/h in Santa Cruz residential zone

Road safety in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is back in the spotlight after a 24-year-old man was caught driving at three times the legal speed limit in a residential area. Local police have opened criminal proceedings against the man, identified as L.F.L., following the incident on July 8.

At 5:40 p.m., police radar on Pedro Suárez Hernández Street—a road connecting the Vuelta de Los Pájaros and Chimisay neighborhoods—clocked the motorcyclist traveling at 102 km/h. This is significantly higher than the street's 30 km/h speed limit, which is strictly enforced to keep pedestrians and residents safe in high-density areas. The driver was operating a motorcycle that did not belong to him.

Municipal authorities use radar units as part of a strategic surveillance plan. These locations are not chosen at random; they are selected based on data, including areas near schools, spots with a history of traffic violations, and neighborhoods where residents have raised concerns about speeding.

Under the Spanish Penal Code, exceeding the speed limit by more than 60 km/h on an urban road is considered a crime against road safety. By pursuing this case, local police aim to deter dangerous driving and protect the most vulnerable road users from the severe risks posed by excessive speed.
