Rising Middle East tensions have stranded Spanish travelers, including a woman from Tenerife, in Thailand after their flights were cancelled, leaving them with little official support and facing significant financial and logistical challenges.

Rising tensions in the Middle East, sparked by conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, are causing widespread problems, especially for international air travel. The region, a crucial link for flights between Europe and Asia, has seen its airspace and major airports like Dubai and Abu Dhabi badly hit. Airport closures have left many travelers stuck far from home. Among those caught up in this unexpected situation is a group of Spanish citizens, including a woman from Tenerife, who are now stranded in Thailand. This publication has heard their stories.

María Tomé, a healthcare worker from Tenerife, is one of them, traveling with her friends Borja, Guayarmina, and Juan. Their planned fifteen-day trip to Thailand has been extended indefinitely. Their return flight was cancelled last Saturday, just hours before they were due to leave, with no clear explanation. More than thirty other Spaniards in Thailand are facing the same problem.

The stranded travelers say they've received little help from official bodies or the airline. According to María Tomé, both Etihad Airways (whose tickets were bought through a travel agent) and the Spanish Embassy in Thailand have told them they can't provide help with accommodation, food, or information. The embassy only sent an email, and follow-up calls from travelers asking for help went unanswered. Even family members in Spain who contacted officials in Madrid were told there was no record of any Spanish citizens stuck in Thailand.

Getting a refund for their original tickets, which cost less than 600 euros, isn't really an option. New flights now cost over 3,000 euros, a huge jump in price. What's more, the airline hasn't rebooked passengers but is still selling new tickets that, according to those affected, are likely to be cancelled at short notice. This is creating a big financial strain, and not all the stranded Spaniards can afford these unexpected costs. Some have even been seen destitute at the airport.

Healthcare is another challenge. One group member needs an antidepressant, but they haven't been able to get essential medication from local health centers. María Tomé has used her social media, sharing a widely viewed video on Instagram, to talk about the uncertainty and fear caused by this ongoing situation.

While waiting for a solution from diplomatic officials or the airlines, these citizens from Tenerife and other Spaniards remain in Thailand. Their holiday has turned into a difficult ordeal, far from home in a culture and language they don't know.
